Creating positive change during winter
The winter season is a perfect time to be sowing the seeds of what you want to grow in the coming year – be that new projects, a new focus, new habit or any kind of positive action or change. Take care to prepare the way – it is just like sowing seeds in our garden.
Prepare the soil
This is where the seeds are going to live – in my case I am preparing my mind to become more receptive and clear. I am also recharging my body through rest, good food, daily stretching and meditation, in readiness for the year ahead.
What do you need to do in order to give room for the new seeds to grow? Perhaps get rid of old habits, clear your mind and make room for growth. Every person will have different needs and ways of doing this. Acknowledge what needs to change and start from there.
Sowing the seeds.
On a personal level, this means doing a lot of the background and admin work that is required in order to keep work and performing flowing in, during the coming year. It is also a time of creativity, writing and envisioning what I want my year to look like.
Bring your focus on the changes that you want to see in your life, envisage what it is that you need to make it happen, and begin to take the steps that are needed for your vision to grow. Every action begins with a thought. Change doesn’t have to be big or drastic – they can be small and subtle – ask yourself – what will work for you?
As the months go on, just like gardening, you must water and nourish the seeds you are planting in order to see them grow.
Winter is a good time to start making small changes
The winter is also a good time, to begin to make small either daily or weekly changes to your life. First, decide on something that you want to bring into your life – for me, one thing I wanted to do a 10-minute daily stretch – after my lower back put me out of action for a week in December – a timely reminder that I wasn’t looking after it.
To bring this change into my life I asked myself the following questions – you can use this template for any small change you want to bring into your life.
WHEN – I decided morning was best for me
WHERE – during the month of January and into February – in the living room – but this will change when we are on the road again – I will need to revisit this next month and creative to keep doing it.
HOW MANY DAYS A WEEK – ideally I wanted daily, but I also know sometimes that is not practical – so I decided on 5 days week.
FOR HOW LONG – a minimum of 10 minutes – I worked out a routine that lasted 10 minutes and I can add to it as I like.
Because the routine is quick, easy and enjoyable – I am doing it every day and its now part of what I do. A small but important change.
If you are feeling like you could do with some guidance or coaching to bring your goals and vision into the new year – then perhaps you could benefit from having a trained coach to help you reach your goals this year – both myself and Mario are coaches and here to help.
